Eleven local churches helped start the school. These churches sent their students to Elder High. The first group of students graduated in 1923. There were eight students in that first graduating class. Since it opened, more than 22,000 students have graduated from Elder High School.
For its first five years, Elder High taught both girls and boys. In 1927, the girls' part of the school moved. They went to Seton High School, which is right next door.
