Elder High School's Story

The first stone for Elder High School was placed in 1922. The school is named after William Henry Elder, who was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Cincinnati. It was the fourth high school in the city and the first Catholic high school run by the church. Later, 12 more Catholic high schools were built nearby.

Many local churches helped start the school. These churches also sent their students to Elder. The first group of students graduated in 1923. There were eight students in that first graduating class. Since it opened, more than 22,000 students have graduated from Elder High School.

For its first five years, Elder High School taught both boys and girls. In 1927, the girls' part of the school moved. They went to Seton High School, which is right next door.

Learning at Elder High School

Elder High School's classes are approved by the Ohio Department of Education. They are also approved by the Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association. The school offers different levels of classes for students.

There is an Honors Program for top students. This program offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These are college-level classes you can take in high school. They include subjects like Art, Calculus, Chemistry, and English. You can also take AP courses in World History, U.S. History, and Physics.

Elder also has other class levels. These range from the most advanced, called Honors+ (H+), to College Prep 2 (CP2). This means students can find classes that fit their learning style.
