What Was Eldoradoville?
Eldoradoville was a temporary settlement built by gold miners. It was established in 1859, after gold was found in the nearby river in 1855. The town grew quickly as more miners arrived hoping to strike it rich.
Life in a Mining Town
At its busiest, Eldoradoville had several stores where miners could buy supplies. It also had places for people to gather and relax after a long day of digging for gold. Life in a mining town like Eldoradoville was often very challenging and required a lot of hard work.
Where Was Eldoradoville Located?
The site of Eldoradoville is in the San Gabriel Mountains. It was built along the East Fork of the San Gabriel River. Today, you can find the Eldoradoville Campground in the same area. This spot is about 1,866 feet (569 meters) above sea level.
What Happened to Eldoradoville?
Eldoradoville did not last very long. On January 18, 1862, a massive storm hit California. This event is known as the Great Flood of 1862. The flood caused the river to overflow its banks with incredible force. The powerful waters completely washed away the town of Eldoradoville. It was never rebuilt.
