Lady Eleanor Brandon (1519 – 27 September 1547) was an important noblewoman in England. She was the third child of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, and Princess Mary Tudor. Her mother was the former Queen of France.
Eleanor was also the niece of King Henry VIII. This made her a close relative of the powerful Tudor dynasty. She had an older sister, Lady Frances Brandon. She also had a younger brother, Henry Brandon, 1st Earl of Lincoln.
From her father's earlier marriage, she had two older half-sisters. Their names were Lady Anne Brandon and Lady Mary Brandon. After her mother passed away in 1533, her father married Catherine Willoughby. This made Eleanor an older half-sister to Henry Brandon, 2nd Duke of Suffolk and Charles Brandon, 3rd Duke of Suffolk.
Her grandparents on her father's side were Sir William Brandon and Elizabeth Bruyn. On her mother's side, her grandparents were King Henry VII of England and Queen Elizabeth of York.
Eleanor's Royal Connection and Marriage
Because Lady Eleanor was related to the royal Tudor dynasty, her marriage was very important. It could help a husband gain more political power. In March 1533, a marriage agreement was made for Lady Eleanor. She was to marry Henry Clifford. He was the oldest son of Henry Clifford, 1st Earl of Cumberland.
Eleanor's mother died nine months later. So, Eleanor waited to move in with her future husband and his family. The Earl of Cumberland prepared for Eleanor's arrival. He built two new towers and a large gallery at Skipton Castle.
Eleanor married Henry Clifford in June 1535. Her uncle, King Henry VIII, attended the wedding. This showed how important the marriage was.
In January 1536, Eleanor had a special role. She was chosen as the chief mourner for the funeral of Catherine of Aragon. Catherine was King Henry VIII's first wife. The funeral was held at Peterborough Cathedral.
