Lady Mary Brandon (born 2 June 1510 – died sometime between 1540 and 1544) was an important English lady. She was the daughter of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, and his second wife, Anne Browne.

Mary married Thomas Stanley, who was the 2nd Baron Monteagle. They had six children together. Mary also worked as a lady-in-waiting for Queen Jane Seymour, who was King Henry VIII's third wife. Queen Jane liked Mary very much. A famous artist named Hans Holbein the Younger even drew a portrait of her.

Early Life and Family

Lady Mary Brandon was born on 2 June 1510. She was the second daughter of Charles Brandon and Anne Browne. Mary had an older sister named Lady Anne Brandon.

Before Mary's parents married, her father, Charles Brandon, had promised to marry Anne Browne. However, he first married another wealthy lady, Margaret Neville. Later, his marriage to Margaret was cancelled because of his earlier promise to Anne. So, he then married Anne Browne. Years later, in 1528, the Pope confirmed that Charles Brandon's divorce was valid. This meant that Mary and her sister Anne were officially considered legitimate children.

In 1511, Mary's mother, Anne Browne, passed away. Four years later, her father, Charles Brandon, who had become the Duke of Suffolk, married his third wife. This was Mary Tudor, who was the widowed Queen of France and King Henry VIII's sister. Mary and her sister Anne grew up with their father, stepmother, and three half-siblings: Henry Brandon, 1st Earl of Lincoln, Lady Frances Brandon, and Lady Eleanor Brandon. They lived at Westhorpe Hall.

Marriage and Children

Before 1527, Mary Brandon married Thomas Stanley, the 2nd Baron Monteagle. Thomas Stanley was made a Knight of the Bath when King Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn, was crowned Queen on 1 June 1533.

Mary and Thomas had six children together:

  • William Stanley, 3rd Baron Monteagle (1528 – 10 November 1581). He married twice and had one daughter.
  • Francis Stanley. He died without having children.
  • Charles Stanley. He also died without having children.
  • Elizabeth Stanley. She married Richard Zouche but did not have children.
  • Anne Stanley. She married Sir John Clifton and had children.
  • Margaret Stanley. She married twice.

Life at Court

Mary spent a lot of her time at the royal court. She was a special lady-in-waiting to Queen Jane Seymour. Queen Jane liked Mary so much that she gave her some jewelry. The famous artist, Hans Holbein the Younger, drew a picture of Mary.

Mary Brandon passed away sometime between 1540 and 1544. Her husband, Thomas Stanley, died later on 18 August 1560.
