Electric Lake facts for kids
Electric Lake is a big reservoir in Utah. It sits high up on the east side of the Wasatch Plateau. A reservoir is like a large, artificial lake where water is stored. Electric Lake was made in 1974 when a large earth-fill dam was built across Huntington Creek.
Most of the land around the lake belongs to Utah Power and Light (UP&L) and the Huntington-Cleveland Irrigation Company. This means access to the lake is somewhat limited. However, the northern part of the lake is next to a national forest, so you can easily get to the water there.

What is Electric Lake Used For?
Electric Lake is important for several reasons. It provides water for farms and helps cool power plants. But it's also a great spot for fun activities and is home to many cold-water fish.
Water for Power and Farms
The lake stores a lot of water. This water is used to help cool down power plants, which is important for making electricity. It also provides water for irrigation, which means watering crops on farms.
A Great Place for Fun
Even with water being used for power and farms, Electric Lake usually stays deep, even during dry summers. This is because it holds enough water to last through a four-year drought! This makes it a fantastic place for recreation.
Getting to Electric Lake
You can reach Electric Lake using two main roads: U-31 and U-264.
- U-31 runs along the south side of the lake for about half a mile, close to the dam. This spot is about 21 miles east of Fairview City and 27 miles northwest of Huntington. There isn't a boat ramp here.
- U-264 follows the north side of the lake for about half a mile. This is about 6 miles east of where U-31 and U-264 meet, and 9 miles west of where U-264 and U-96 meet. At this spot, you'll find restrooms and a concrete ramp to launch boats.
Both highways are kept clear all year. This makes Electric Lake a popular place for people to visit even in the winter.
