Early Life and Education
Eli Sims Shorter was born on March 15, 1823, in Monticello, Georgia. He went to local schools as he grew up. Later, he attended Yale College, a famous university. He studied law there and graduated in 1844.
After finishing his studies, Shorter moved to Eufaula, Alabama. In 1844, he was "admitted to the bar." This means he passed the necessary tests to become a lawyer. He then started his own law practice in Eufaula. Besides being a lawyer, he also worked in farming.
A Career in Politics
Eli Sims Shorter became involved in politics as a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the United States Congress. He served two terms, from March 4, 1855, to March 3, 1859. During this time, he represented the state of Alabama.
Service During the Civil War
After his time in Congress, Shorter returned to practicing law in Eufaula. When the Civil War began, he joined the Confederate States Army. He served as a colonel, which is a high-ranking officer. He led the 18th Regiment Alabama Infantry during the war.
Later Life
Eli Sims Shorter passed away in Eufaula, Alabama, on April 29, 1879. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery in Eufaula.
