Elias Viktor Zebulon Lindholm (born 2 December 1994) is a professional ice hockey player from Sweden. He plays as a centre or right wing for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Elias was picked by the Carolina Hurricanes as the 5th player overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He played his first five NHL seasons with the Hurricanes.

Playing career

Starting in Sweden

Elias Lindholm began his hockey journey in Sweden. He played for the Brynäs IF U20 team and was a top scorer for their U18 team. His skills were noticed early on. He was even drafted by a Russian team, SKA St. Petersburg, in the KHL Draft.

Later, Lindholm joined the Swedish Elite League, playing for Brynäs' main team. He was a key player for their junior teams. He also played in big international tournaments like the U19 World Junior A Challenge.

In the 2012–13 season, Lindholm was the best junior player in the Elitserien league. He scored 30 points, with 11 goals and 19 assists. He also helped Sweden win a silver medal at the U20 World Junior Championship.

Joining the Carolina Hurricanes

After being drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes, Lindholm made their team for the 2013–14 NHL season. He scored his very first NHL goal in his fourth game. This happened on 10 October 2013, against Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals.

At 18 years and 311 days old, Lindholm became the youngest Swedish-born NHL player to score a goal. He broke the record previously held by Gabriel Landeskog. On 8 March 2015, Lindholm scored his first career hat trick. This means he scored three goals in one game. It was a big moment in a 7–4 win against the Edmonton Oilers.

Time with the Calgary Flames

On 23 June 2018, Lindholm was traded to the Calgary Flames. His teammate Noah Hanifin also joined him. In return, the Hurricanes received Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland, and Adam Fox. Lindholm signed a six-year contract with the Flames.

In his first season with Calgary, Lindholm played on a top line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. All three players had their best seasons ever. Lindholm scored 27 goals and 78 points. The next season, he scored even more goals, reaching 29. He became one of the Flames' most important forwards.

During the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, held in a special "bubble" due to the pandemic, the Flames won their first series. They beat the Winnipeg Jets. However, they lost to the Dallas Stars in the next round. Lindholm scored two goals and four assists in 10 playoff games.

For the 2020–21 NHL season, the league changed its format. All Canadian teams played in a special North Division. The Flames had a tough year. Their coach was replaced by Darryl Sutter. Sutter moved Lindholm back to playing centre. He played on a top line with Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk. This line was very successful. Lindholm scored 19 goals and 28 assists in only 56 games. The Flames did not make the playoffs that year.

The 2021–22 NHL season saw the NHL return to its normal divisions. This was a very successful season for the Flames. Lindholm, Gaudreau, and Tkachuk formed one of the best lines in the NHL. Lindholm scored his 40th goal of the season on 23 April 2022. This was the first time he reached 40 goals. Gaudreau and Tkachuk also scored 40 goals. It was rare for three linemates to all score 40 goals in one season. Lindholm finished the season with 42 goals and 40 assists for 82 points. The Flames won their division. Lindholm was also nominated for the Frank J. Selke Trophy. This award goes to the best defensive forward in the league.

In the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Flames played the Dallas Stars again. Lindholm scored the only goal in Game 1, leading to a 1–0 win. The Flames won the series in seven games. In the second round, they faced the Edmonton Oilers. This was a big rivalry series called the "Battle of Alberta." The Oilers won the series in five games.

Moving to the Vancouver Canucks

On 31 January 2024, Lindholm was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. The Flames were not expected to make the playoffs, and Lindholm's contract was ending. The Canucks sent Andrei Kuzmenko, two young defense prospects, and draft picks to the Flames.

Right after joining the Canucks, Lindholm made an impact. He scored two or more goals in his very first game with the team. He also tied a team record for most game-winning goals in his first six games.

Joining the Boston Bruins

After his contract with the Canucks ended, Lindholm became a free agent. On 1 July 2024, he signed a seven-year deal with the Boston Bruins. This brought him back to the Eastern Conference.

Personal life

Elias Lindholm was born in Boden, Sweden, but he grew up in Gävle. His father, Mikael Lindholm, was also a professional ice hockey player. Mikael played many games in Sweden and 18 games in the NHL for the Los Angeles Kings.

Elias is a cousin of ice hockey player Calle Järnkrok. He is also the younger brother of another hockey player, Oliver Lindholm. Elias is not related to the player Hampus Lindholm. He started playing ice hockey in Hanover, Germany, when he was three years old. This was when his father was playing for the Hannover Scorpions.
