Elisabeth Singleton Moss (born July 24, 1982) is an American actor and director known for her powerful roles in television and film. She has won many awards for her acting, including two Golden Globe Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2017, Vulture magazine called her the "Queen of Peak TV" because of her success in popular shows.
Moss started acting as a child in the 1990s. She first became well-known for playing Zoey Bartlet, the president's daughter, in the political TV show The West Wing (1999–2006). She gained even more fame as Peggy Olson in the drama series Mad Men (2007–2015), where her character grows from a secretary to a talented copywriter.
Her most famous role is June Osborne in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale (2017–2025). For this role, she won two Emmy Awards. She has also starred in movies like The Invisible Man (2020) and Us (2019).

Early Life and Education
Elisabeth Moss was born on July 24, 1982, in Los Angeles, California. Her parents were both musicians. Her father, Ronald Charles Moss, was from England, and her mother, Linda Moss, is an American who plays jazz and blues harmonica. Moss has a younger brother and was raised as a Scientologist.
Before she became an actor, Moss wanted to be a professional dancer. As a teenager, she moved to New York City to study ballet at the famous School of American Ballet. She also studied with the dancer Suzanne Farrell at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
As she started getting more acting jobs, it became hard to balance school and her career. She began homeschooling and graduated in 1999.
Acting Career
First Roles on Screen
Moss's first acting job was in 1990 in the TV miniseries Lucky/Chances. She then had small roles in shows like Picket Fences and provided voices for animated specials like Frosty Returns.
In 1999, she got her big break on the TV drama The West Wing. She played Zoey Bartlet, the daughter of the U.S. President, played by Martin Sheen. Her character was a key part of the show's fourth season, and Moss appeared on the show until it ended in 2006.
During this time, she also appeared in movies like Girl, Interrupted (1999) and The Missing (2003).
Becoming a TV Star with Mad Men
From 2007 to 2015, Moss starred as Peggy Olson in the hit AMC series Mad Men. The show was set in the 1960s at an advertising agency. Her character, Peggy, starts as a secretary but works her way up to become a successful copywriter. This role earned her five nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award.
While working on Mad Men, Moss also performed on stage. In 2008, she made her debut on Broadway in a play called Speed-the-Plow. In 2011, she acted in a play in London's West End called The Children's Hour with actor Keira Knightley.
She also won a Golden Globe Award for her role as a detective in the 2013 miniseries Top of the Lake.
Success with The Handmaid's Tale and Films
In 2017, Moss took on the lead role of June Osborne in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale. The show is based on a famous novel and is set in a future society where women have few rights. Moss has dual citizenship, meaning she is a citizen of both the United Kingdom and the United States.
She was married to actor and comedian Fred Armisen from 2009 to 2011.
Moss is a Scientologist and also calls herself a feminist. When a fan on Instagram asked if her role on The Handmaid's Tale made her question her religion, Moss defended her beliefs. She said that freedom of religion and equal rights for everyone are very important to her.
In January 2024, Moss announced she was pregnant. She had her first child later that year.
