History of Elizabeth
Before European settlers arrived, the area where Elizabeth is now was home to the Sac and Fox Nation people. White settlers started moving into the area in the early 1800s. They were interested in the lead (a type of metal) found in the ground.
The mining of lead in Jo Daviess County is thought to have led to the Black Hawk War in 1832. During this conflict, the Apple River Fort was built for protection. A battle took place there on June 24, 1832.
During the battle, a brave woman named Elizabeth Armstrong encouraged the people at the fort to keep fighting. Because of her courage and the help of other women, the community was later named Elizabeth. It was officially made a village in 1868.
In 1878, the Chicago Great Western Railroad built tracks through the area. This helped the village grow and brought more people to live there. The old Elizabeth station is still there today. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 because of its historical importance.
