Company History
The First Red Door
The company began in 1910 as a salon called Red Door on the famous Fifth Avenue in New York City. Its founder, Elizabeth Arden, was a pioneer in the American beauty industry.
Over the years, the company was bought and sold by several other large businesses. In 1971, it was sold to Eli Lilly and Company for $38 million. Later, in 1987, it was sold again to Fabergé for $657 million. In 2003, a company called FFI bought Elizabeth Arden from Unilever for $225 million and renamed it Elizabeth Arden, Inc. The company's main offices are now in Florida.
Elizabeth Arden is known for creating makeup sets where all the colors match. It also sells a wide variety of skin care products and treatments.
Famous Faces and Fragrances
Many famous people have been the "face" of the Elizabeth Arden brand. This means they appeared in advertisements for the company. These have included models like Vendela Kirsebom and Amber Valletta, and actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. In 2014, model Karlina Caune became the new face of the brand.
After its founder passed away, the company began to focus more on creating perfumes. Its most famous perfume is called "Red Door," named after the original salons. Other popular scents include "Fifth Avenue," "Green Tea," and "Pretty."
The company also partners with celebrities to create their perfume lines. It holds the license for fragrances by Britney Spears, Elizabeth Taylor, and Mariah Carey. More recently, perfumes from Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift were added to the Elizabeth Arden collection.
Helping Others
In 2012, Elizabeth Arden started a campaign on the website Pinterest to help women with cancer. The goal was to provide makeup to help them feel more confident during their treatment. This was part of a program called "Look Good Feel Better," which the company has supported for many years.
Sale to Revlon
In June 2016, the American cosmetics company Revlon announced it would buy Elizabeth Arden for $870 million. When the purchase was complete, the combined company was expected to make about $3 billion in sales each year.
Revlon officially finished its purchase of Elizabeth Arden on September 7, 2016. After the sale, Elizabeth Arden's former CEO, E. Scott Beattie, joined Revlon's leadership team.
In June 2022, Revlon, the parent company of Elizabeth Arden, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This is a legal way for a company to reorganize its business and finances to help pay off its debts.
