Elizabeth Baldwin Garland (born May 5, 1930 – died March 31, 2020) was an American archaeologist. She was an expert in the history of the Great Lakes region and Michigan before written records. She wrote many important books and papers about her discoveries.

Early Life and Education

Elizabeth Garland studied at several well-known colleges. She earned a bachelor's degree in geology from Wellesley College. Later, she received a master's degree in anthropology from Radcliffe College. In 1967, she completed her PhD in anthropology at Harvard University.

Career at Western Michigan University

In 1964, Dr. Garland started teaching at Western Michigan University (WMU). She was the very first archaeologist to join the faculty there. Just two years later, in 1966, she helped create WMU's own archaeology program. She also helped set up a special field school with Michigan State University. This school allowed students to get hands-on experience in archaeology.

Dr. Garland led many exciting digs in Michigan. She explored several areas along the Kalamazoo River to learn about ancient cultures.

Leadership and Mentorship

Elizabeth Garland was a leader in the field of archaeology. She started a local chapter of the Michigan Archaeological Society. In 1976, she became the president of the Conference on Michigan Archaeology. She held this important position until 1980.

Dr. Garland was also known for helping her students. She was a great mentor, especially to young women. Many of her students went on to have successful careers in archaeology because of her guidance.

Later Years

Dr. Garland stopped teaching in 1992. In 2002, Western Michigan University honored her by naming her an "Outstanding Emeritus Scholar."

Elizabeth Garland passed away on March 31, 2020. She was 89 years old.
