History of Elk Creek
Elk Creek started around 1873. This was after the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad built tracks through the area. The village got its name from a nearby stream, also called Elk Creek. This stream was named because people used to see elk there a long time ago.

Since the 1970s, there has been talk about mining special metals near Elk Creek. These metals are called rare earth minerals.
