A Look Back at Elkport's History
Elkport became a town in 1855. It got its name from a nearby stream called Elk Creek.
The Big Flood of 2004
In May 2004, Elkport faced a very serious flood. The flood caused a lot of damage to the town. After the flood, everyone living in Elkport made a big decision. They chose to sell their homes to the United States federal government. This was part of a special program called a "buyout."
The government bought the homes so they could be torn down. This helped keep people safe from future floods. By September 2006, almost all of Elkport's buildings were removed.
