Ellendale is a community in Shelby County, Tennessee, United States. It's not a city with its own government, but it's a place where many people live. Ellendale is part of the larger Memphis metropolitan area.
How Ellendale Got Its Name
The very first railroad in Shelby County was built in 1856. It was called the Memphis & Ohio Railroad. This train line stretched all the way from Memphis to Paris, Tennessee.
Later, in 1872, another big railroad company bought the Memphis & Ohio Railroad. This new company was the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, often called the L&N Railroad for short.
The L&N company decided to hold a contest to rename the area near their train station, which was known as Bond's Station. The name "Ellendale" was chosen! It was a clever way to use the letters "L" and "N" from the railroad's name.
According to some records, Ellendale eventually became part of the nearby city of Bartlett in 1977. This process is called "annexation," which means a smaller area officially joins a larger city.
