Ellison Bay is a small community in northern Door County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located along Highway 42 right on the Green Bay. In 2020, about 249 people lived there. It's known for being a beautiful spot with lots of nature.

History of Ellison Bay
The area around Ellison Bay was once called Joe-Sahbe Bay by Native Americans. This name came from Joe-Sahbe, a son of the Potawatomi Chief Neatoshing. Joe-Sahbe means "Feather of the rolling cloud."
The community of Ellison Bay was started in 1872. It was founded by John Eliasen, who was an immigrant from Denmark. In the early days, important businesses were cutting down trees for lumber and fishing. Later, in the early 1900s, growing fruit became popular. Today, tourism is the main business in Ellison Bay. Many people visit to enjoy the natural beauty and attractions.
Schools in Ellison Bay
The schools that serve the Ellison Bay community are part of the Gibraltar Area Schools district. The two main schools are Gibraltar Elementary School and Gibraltar Secondary School. These schools help educate the children and teens living in the area.
Fun Things to Do in Ellison Bay
Ellison Bay has many interesting places to visit and things to do.
One special place is The Clearing. This is a private center where adults can go to learn different skills. It was started by Jens Jensen, a famous landscape architect. The Clearing is so important that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Other fun spots include the Mink River, which is a few miles south. You can also find Turtle Ridge Gallery, a cooking school, and several pottery studios. There's even a building that used to be a church, then an Asian art gallery, and is now a coffee shop!
When you get hungry, local restaurants like the Viking Grill offer a "fish boil." This is a traditional way of cooking fish that's very popular in Door County. The Wickman House is another restaurant that uses fresh, local ingredients.
Ellison Bluff County Park
Ellison Bluff County Park is a great place for outdoor adventures. It has a beautiful hiking trail with amazing views. There's also a picnic area where you can enjoy a meal outdoors. A special fenced walkway lets you get close to the edge of the bluff safely.
The bluff area is home to many wildflowers and trees. Some cedar trees found here are over 250 years old! You might see rough-winged swallows flying around, catching insects. Other birds that live in the park include the American redstart, great-crested flycatcher, broad-winged hawk, wood thrush, scarlet tanager, yellow-throated vireo, and pileated woodpecker. A large part of the park, about 170 acres, is protected as the Ellison Bluff State Natural Area.
