Elly Ney (born September 27, 1882 – died March 31, 1968) was a famous German pianist. She was especially known for playing the music of Beethoven. She was very popular in Germany during her time.

A Musical Journey

Elly Ney was born in Düsseldorf, Germany. Her mother was a music teacher, and her father worked as a registrar. Elly's grandmother was the one who first showed her the amazing music of Beethoven. She also strongly supported Elly's piano playing.

Elly studied music in Cologne with teachers like Isidor Seiss and Karl Bötcher. In 1901, she won a special award called the Mendelssohn Scholarship. This allowed her to study in Vienna. There, she learned from famous teachers such as Theodor Leschetizky and Emil von Sauer.

After her studies, Elly taught at the Cologne Conservatory for three years. Then, she became a touring virtuoso. This means she traveled a lot to perform concerts for many people. In 1927, she was given a special honor by the city of Bonn, where Beethoven was born.

In 1932, Elly Ney started a music group called the Elly Ney Trio. It included Wilhelm Stross on violin and Ludwig Hoelscher on cello. Sometimes, for larger pieces, they played with Florizel von Reuter (violin) and Walter Trampler (viola). She performed in many parts of the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, USA.

During a Difficult Time

During the time of Nazi Germany, Elly Ney joined the Nazi Party in 1937. She took part in "cultural education" camps. She also became an honorary member of the League of German Girls, a youth organization.

Elly Ney held views that were against Jewish people. However, she did record a piece by Felix Mendelssohn, who was Jewish, in 1960. She received an award called the War Merit Cross, 2nd Class, for helping soldiers.

After World War II, the city of Bonn stopped her from performing there. In 1952, they said she was a "pronounced National Socialist" and refused to let her perform. Even so, she was named an Honorary Citizen of Tutzing in 1952.

Elly Ney continued to perform concerts until she died. She focused more and more on Beethoven's piano music. She played his works with great power and energy. She also made some beautiful recordings of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's music. These included his Piano Concerto No. 15, Piano Sonata No. 11, and Rondo in A minor.
