Elena Ethel "Elly" Schlein (born 4 May 1985) is an Italian politician. She also holds American and Swiss citizenships. Since March 2023, she has been the leader of the Democratic Party (PD).
Elly Schlein is a member of Italy's Chamber of Deputies. Before this, she was the vice-president of Emilia-Romagna. She also served as a member of the European Parliament. In February 2023, she was chosen as the new leader of the Democratic Party. She is the first woman to lead this important Italian political party.

Early Life and Education
Elena Ethel Schlein was born on May 4, 1985, in Lugano, Switzerland. Her father, Melvin Schlein, is an American academic. Her mother, Maria Paola Viviani, is a university professor.
Her family has a history of public service. Her maternal grandfather was a politician in Italy. Her paternal ancestors came from a region now in Ukraine.
Later, Elly Schlein moved to Bologna, Italy. She studied law at the University of Bologna. She graduated in 2011. She has three citizenships: American, Italian, and Swiss.
Political Career
Early Steps in Politics
Elly Schlein began her political involvement early. In 2008 and 2012, she volunteered for Barack Obama's presidential campaigns in the United States.
In 2011, she helped start a student group called Progrè. This group worked on issues like migration and prison reform.
In 2013, she became known for the #OccupyPD campaign. This movement criticized political decisions within the Democratic Party. She supported Giuseppe Civati in the party's leadership election that year.
Serving in the European Parliament
In February 2014, Schlein ran for a seat in the European Parliament. This is a group of elected officials from countries in the European Union. She was elected in the North-Eastern constituency.
While in the European Parliament, she worked on development issues. She was also part of a group that worked with Albania.
In 2015, she decided to leave the Democratic Party. She disagreed with some of the party's new policies. She then joined a different party called Possible. She did not run for re-election in 2019.
Vice-President of Emilia-Romagna
In January 2020, Schlein ran for the regional council of Emilia-Romagna. This is a region in Italy. She was part of a left-wing group. She received many votes, setting a record for a councilor in that region.
After her election, she was appointed as the vice-president of Emilia-Romagna. She worked alongside Stefano Bonaccini, the president.
Leading the Democratic Party
In September 2022, Elly Schlein was elected to Italy's Chamber of Deputies. This is one of the two houses of the Italian Parliament.
A few weeks later, the leader of the Democratic Party resigned. Schlein decided to run for the party's top position. On February 26, 2023, she won the election. She became the new leader of the Democratic Party.
She is the first woman to lead the party. She is also the youngest person to hold this role since the party started in 2007. She officially took over on March 12, 2023.
2024 European Parliament Elections
In the European elections held in April 2024, the Democratic Party received 24.1% of the votes. They came in second place.
