Elena Ethel "Elly" Schlein (born 4 May 1985) is an Italian politician. She has been the leader, or "secretary," of the Democratic Party (PD) since March 12, 2023. This makes her the first woman to lead the party.
Elly Schlein is also a member of Italy's Chamber of Deputies, which is like a part of the country's parliament. Before this, she was the vice president of the Emilia-Romagna region and a member of the European Parliament.

Early Life and Education
Elly Schlein was born on May 4, 1985, in Lugano, Switzerland. Her father, Melvin Schlein, is an American professor who studies politics. Her mother, Maria Paola Viviani, teaches law at a university in Italy.
Elly's family has roots in different countries. Her paternal grandfather came from a place now in Ukraine. Her maternal grandfather, Agostino Viviani, was a politician in Italy.
Later, Elly moved to Bologna, Italy. She studied law at the University of Bologna and graduated in 2011. Elly Schlein holds three citizenships: American, Italian, and Swiss.
Political Journey
Getting Started in Politics
Elly Schlein began her political journey by volunteering. In 2008 and 2012, she helped with Barack Obama's presidential campaigns in the United States.
In 2011, she helped start a group called Progrè. This group worked to raise awareness about issues like migration and prison conditions.
In 2013, she became involved in a campaign called #OccupyPD. This movement criticized certain political decisions in Italy and opposed the formation of a "grand coalition" government.
Serving in the European Parliament
In February 2014, Elly Schlein ran for a seat in the European Parliament. She was elected and represented the North-East Italy region.
While in the European Parliament, she worked on issues related to development. She also helped with discussions between the European Union and Albania.
In 2015, she decided to leave the Democratic Party. She disagreed with some of the party's new ideas at the time. She then joined a different party called Possible.
Vice-President of Emilia-Romagna
In January 2020, Elly Schlein ran for the regional council of Emilia-Romagna. She was elected with a very high number of votes, setting a record for a council member in the region's history.
After her election, she was appointed as the vice-president of Emilia-Romagna by Stefano Bonaccini. She served in this role until October 2022.
Leading the Democratic Party
In September 2022, Elly Schlein was elected to Italy's Chamber of Deputies. A few weeks later, the leader of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, resigned.
Elly Schlein then decided to run for the leadership of the Democratic Party. On February 26, 2023, she won the election, becoming the new secretary of the party. This was a big moment because she became the first woman and the youngest person to lead the Democratic Party since it was formed in 2007.
In April 2023, Elly Schlein shared her personal views on surrogacy. In the June 2024 European elections, the Democratic Party received 24.1% of the votes, placing second.
