The Story of Elma Chips
Elma Chips started in 1974. Back then, a big company called PepsiCo bought two smaller snack companies in Brazil. These were American Potato Chips and Elma Produtos Alimentícios. PepsiCo joined them together to create Elma Chips.
The Elma company was started in 1958 by two sisters, Elfriede Wagner and Maria Unger. They made tasty, crunchy sticks called Stiksy by hand. These were like long, salty pretzels and came in green bags. When the two companies joined, they became very popular. Their famous slogan was: "It is impossible to eat just one!"
Popular Snacks Over Time
The very first snack Elma Chips made was called Baconzitos. This was a bacon-flavored wheat snack. It started selling in the same year the company began, 1974.
Later, Elma Chips started making other famous snacks in Brazil:
- In 1976, they began making Cheetos.
- In 1978, they introduced Cebolitos, which are like Funyuns.
- In 1982, Zambinos came out, a corn snack with a pizza flavor.
- In 1983, Fandangos joined the snack lineup.
- In 1986, many popular snacks arrived: Ruffles, Doritos, Pingo d'Ouro, and Ovinhos.
Fun Promotions and New Snacks
From 1997, Elma Chips became even more popular with special promotions. They would put cool gifts like tazos and cards inside their snack bags. These gifts often featured characters from popular shows like Looney Tunes, Animaniacs, Pokémon, and Naruto. They also had their own original collections like Dracomania and Mythomania.
In 2004, Elma Chips launched Sensações. These were smooth potato chips with special flavors, made for people who wanted something a bit different. In 2006, they started making Lay's Stax under the name Elma Chips Stax. This was because the Lay's brand wasn't sold in Brazil yet.
In 2007, Elma Chips bought another company called Lucky. This added more snacks like Fofura and Torcida to their collection. Finally, in 2013, the well-known Lay's potato chips started being made by Elma Chips. In 2021, the Sensações brand was renamed Lay's Sensações.
