The Story of Elma Chips
How Elma Chips Started
Elma Chips began in 1974. This happened when PepsiCo bought two companies and joined them together. These companies were American Potato Chips from São Paulo and Elma Produtos Alimentícios.
The Elma company started earlier, in 1958. It was created by two sisters, Elfriede Wagner and Maria Unger. They used to make crunchy sticks by hand. These sticks were like long, salty pretzels called Stiksy. They sold them in green bags.
When the two companies joined, it was a big success. Elma Chips became very famous. Their well-known slogan was: "It is impossible to eat just one!"
New Snacks Over the Years
The very first snack created by Elma Chips was Baconzitos. This was a wheat snack with a bacon flavor. It started being sold in the same year the company began, 1974.
Later, in 1976, Elma Chips started making Cheetos in Brazil. Then came Cebolitos in 1978, which is like Funyuns. In 1982, they launched Zambinos, a corn snack with a pizza flavor.
More popular snacks followed. Fandangos arrived in 1983. In 1986, they introduced Ruffles, Doritos, Pingo d'Ouro, and Ovinhos.
Fun Promotions and New Brands
From 1997, Elma Chips became even more popular. They started putting cool gifts inside their snack bags. These gifts included tazos and cards. They featured characters from popular shows like Looney Tunes, Animaniacs, Pokémon, and Naruto. They also had their own original collections like Dracomania and Mythomania.
In 2004, Elma Chips launched Sensações. These were smooth potato chips with special flavors. They were made for people who wanted a more grown-up snack.
In 2006, Elma Chips started making Lay's Stax under the name Elma Chips Stax. This was because the Lay's brand itself was not sold in Brazil at that time.
In 2007, the company bought another snack company called Lucky. Lucky was known for its Fofura and Torcida snacks. This added even more choices to Elma Chips' products.
Finally, in 2013, the famous Lay's potato chips began to be made by Elma Chips. In 2021, the Sensações brand was renamed Lay's Sensações.
Popular Snacks
Baconzitos
Baconzitos is a well-known Brazilian snack. It is a wheat snack that tastes like bacon. Elma Chips first introduced it in 1974.
This snack is special because it was the first original brand launched by Elma Chips. Before that, the company was mostly known for Stiksy. Baconzitos is still one of Elma Chips' main and oldest snacks. Many people think of it as a classic Elma Chips treat. It is often enjoyed along with Cebolitos (which are like Funyuns).
