Elmer "Moose" Vasko (born December 11, 1935 – died October 30, 1998) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was a strong defenceman who played for 13 seasons in the NHL. He is best known for his time with the Chicago Black Hawks, where he helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1961.
About Moose Vasko
Elmer Vasko was born in a place called Duparquet, Quebec, in Canada. He got the nickname "Moose" because he was very tall and strong. He stood 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 meters) and weighed 200 pounds (91 kg)! He was one of the few players in the NHL's early days who came from a Slovak background.
Even though hockey was a rough sport back then, and players didn't wear mouthguards or helmets, Moose Vasko never lost any of his teeth during his entire NHL career! He was also recognized as one of the best defencemen. He was named a second-team all-star in both 1963 and 1964.
Playing in the NHL
Moose Vasko started his professional hockey journey in 1955. He played most of his career with the Chicago Black Hawks. As a defenceman, his main job was to stop the other team from scoring goals. He was known for his strong defensive play and his ability to clear the puck from his team's zone.
The biggest highlight of his career came in the 1960–61 season. He helped the Chicago Black Hawks win the Stanley Cup. This is one of the hardest trophies to win in all of sports! After playing for the Black Hawks, he also played for the Minnesota North Stars. He retired from professional hockey in 1970.
