Elsa Pataky was born in Madrid, Spain. Her father, José Francisco Lafuente, was a biochemist, which is a scientist who studies living things at a chemical level. Her mother, Cristina Medianu Pataky, worked as a publicist, helping to promote people or products.

Elsa has a younger half-brother named Cristian Prieto Medianu. He is a director who makes movies. Elsa uses her mother's maiden name, Pataky, to honor her grandmother, Rosa Pataky.

Elsa went to Universidad CEU San Pablo to study journalism. She also took acting classes there. Besides speaking Spanish and Romanian, she can speak English, Italian, Portuguese, and French very well.
