Else Berg (born February 19, 1877, in Ratibor) was a talented painter. She was born in Germany but later became a Dutch citizen. Else was Jewish and was part of an art group called the Bergense School. She was married to another painter, Mommie Schwarz. Sadly, both Else and her husband were killed during the Holocaust, a very dark time in history.

About Else Berg

Else Berg was born in a town called Ratibor. At that time, Ratibor was part of a country known as the German Empire. Her father was a Liberal Jewish man who owned a cigar factory.

Her Art Education

In 1895, Else began her art studies. She went to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, a city in Belgium. Five years later, her parents helped her financially. She continued her studies at the Berlin University of the Arts in Germany. There, she learned from a teacher named Arthur Kampf. Some people also believe she studied art in Paris, France.

Meeting Mommie Schwarz

In 1905, Else met Mommie Schwarz. He was a Dutch painter who had just returned from New York. Mommie came to Berlin to learn about a new art style called German Expressionism. Else and Mommie traveled to Paris together. They wanted to see the newest art trends there.

The next year, in 1906, they moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. They became part of the Modern Art movement. For many years, they traveled a lot, but they each had their own art studios. In 1920, Else and Mommie got married. Four years later, Else became a Dutch citizen.

Travels and New Art Styles

Even though they sometimes had money problems, Else and Mommie kept traveling. They visited places in Eastern Europe, Italy, and France. They also spent a long time on an island called Mallorca. While there, they were with another artist named Leo Gestel and his wife. On Mallorca, they started to explore a new art style called Cubism. This style uses geometric shapes to show objects.

A Difficult Time

As the Nazis gained power in Germany, many of Else and Mommie's friends and family left. They moved to countries like England or the United States to be safe.

At first, Else and Mommie felt safe in Amsterdam. But then, Jewish people were forced to wear a special "Yellow Badge." Else and Mommie refused to wear it and went into hiding in a place called Baambrugge. Sadly, they were found. In November 1942, they were arrested. They were sent to Auschwitz, a terrible camp where many people were killed. Else and Mommie were murdered there soon after they arrived.
