Elvin Richard Bishop (born October 21, 1942) is an American musician. He is known for playing the blues and rock music. Elvin Bishop is a talented singer, guitarist, bandleader, and songwriter.

He was honored by being added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. This was for his time with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. In 2016, he was also inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame as a solo artist.

Early Life and Education

Elvin Bishop was born in Glendale, California. He grew up on a farm in Elliott, Iowa. When he was 10, his family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He went to Will Rogers High School in Tulsa. Elvin was a very good student. He earned a full scholarship to the University of Chicago. There, he studied physics.

Elvin Bishop's Music Career

Starting with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band

In 1963, Elvin Bishop moved to Chicago for college. He met harmonica player Paul Butterfield. Elvin joined Butterfield's blues band. He played with them for five years.

At first, Elvin was the only guitarist. Later, Mike Bloomfield joined. Mike often played the main guitar parts. After Mike left, Elvin became the lead guitarist again. The band's third album was even named The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw. This name came from Elvin's nickname, "Pigboy Crabshaw." He recorded one more album with the band in 1968.

His Special Guitar, "Red Dog"

While playing with the Butterfield Blues Band, Elvin met another blues guitarist, Louis Myers. Elvin traded his Telecaster guitar for Louis's Gibson ES-345. Elvin loved the Gibson so much that he kept it. He has used this guitar throughout his career. He even gave it a special nickname: "Red Dog."

Going Solo and Forming His Own Group

In 1968, Elvin Bishop started his own band, called the Elvin Bishop Group. He also played with other famous musicians. He joined Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper on their album The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper.

His group signed with Fillmore Records. This record company was owned by Bill Graham. Bill Graham also owned famous music venues called the Fillmore.

Playing with Other Music Legends

Elvin Bishop often played with other bands. On June 8, 1969, he played with the Grateful Dead. This was at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. He played several blues songs with them.

In 1971, the Elvin Bishop Group played concerts with The Allman Brothers Band. Elvin even joined them on stage for one of his own songs. Over the years, he has recorded with many blues artists. These include John Lee Hooker and Zydeco artist Clifton Chenier. He also toured with B.B. King in 1995.

His Big Hit Song

In 1976, Elvin Bishop released his most famous song. It was called "Fooled Around and Fell in Love." This song became a huge hit! It reached number 3 on the US Billboard music chart. The singer on this song was Mickey Thomas. Mickey and the drummer, Donny Baldwin, later joined the band Jefferson Starship.

Later Career and Awards

During the 1960s and 1970s, Elvin Bishop recorded for several record labels. These included Fillmore, Epic, and Capricorn.

In 1988, he signed with Alligator Records. He released many albums with them. He also worked with his early blues teacher, Little Smokey Smothers. They recorded two albums together.

Elvin Bishop has received many honors. In 1998, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. In 2008, his album The Blues Rolls On was nominated for a Grammy Award. This award was for Best Traditional Blues Album.

In 2012, his live concert DVD was nominated for Best Blues DVD. In 2015, he received six nominations for the 36th Blues Music Awards. He won three of these awards.

As mentioned, in April 2015, Elvin Bishop was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This was for his role as an original member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

More recently, his album Elvin Bishop's Big Fun Trio was nominated for a Grammy in 2017. In 2021, his album with Charlie Musselwhite, 100 Years of Blues, also received a Grammy nomination. Elvin Bishop continues to make music and perform.
