Elvin Richard Bishop (born October 21, 1942) is an American blues and rock music singer and guitarist. He is also a bandleader and songwriter. Elvin Bishop was honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. This was for his time with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. In 2016, he was also added to the Blues Hall of Fame as a solo artist.

Early Life and Education

Elvin Bishop was born in Glendale, California. His family lived on a farm in Elliott, Iowa. When he was 10, they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. He went to Will Rogers High School there. Elvin was a very smart student. He won a special scholarship to the University of Chicago. In 1960, he moved to Chicago for college. He studied physics at the university.

Music Career Highlights

In 1963, Elvin Bishop met Paul Butterfield in Chicago. Paul played the harmonica. Elvin joined Paul's blues band. He stayed with them for five years. At first, Elvin was the only guitarist. Later, Mike Bloomfield joined the band. Mike played most of the lead guitar parts.

After Mike Bloomfield left, Elvin became the main guitarist again. The band's third album was named The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw. This name came from Elvin's nickname, "Pigboy Crabshaw." He recorded one more album with the band, In My Own Dream, in 1968.

While in the Butterfield Blues Band, Elvin met blues guitarist Louis Myers. Elvin traded his guitar for Louis's Gibson ES-345. Elvin loved the Gibson guitar so much. He kept it and has used it ever since. He calls his Gibson ES-345 "Red Dog."

In 1968, Elvin Bishop started his own band. It was called the Elvin Bishop Group. He also played with Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper. They made an album together. His group signed with Fillmore Records. This company was owned by Bill Graham. Bill Graham also owned famous music places called the Fillmore.

Elvin Bishop played with the Grateful Dead in 1969. This was at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. He played a long blues song with them. He also played two other songs.

In 1971, the Elvin Bishop Group played concerts with The Allman Brothers Band. Elvin joined them on stage. He played his song "Drunken-Hearted Boy." Over the years, Elvin has played with many blues artists. These include John Lee Hooker and Clifton Chenier. In 1995, he toured with the famous B.B. King.

Elvin Bishop became very popular on radio in 1975. This was with his song "Travelin' Shoes." A year later, in 1976, he released his most famous song. It was called "Fooled Around and Fell in Love." This song became a huge hit. It reached number 3 on the US music charts. The singer on this song was Mickey Thomas. He later joined the band Jefferson Starship.

Elvin Bishop has released many albums. In 1988, he signed with Alligator Records. He released albums like Big Fun and Ace in the Hole. He also recorded with his old teacher, Little Smokey Smothers. They made albums like That's My Partner and Chicago Blues Buddies.

In 1998, Elvin Bishop was added to the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. In 2005, he released Gettin' My Groove Back. In 2008, he released The Blues Rolls On. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award. Many famous musicians played on it. These included B.B. King and Derek Trucks. In 2010, he released Red Dog Speaks.

His first live concert DVD came out in 2012. It was called That's My Thing: Elvin Bishop Live in Concert. This DVD was also nominated for an award. In 2015, Elvin Bishop won three awards at the 36th Blues Music Awards.

In April 2015, Elvin Bishop was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This was for being a founding member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. His album Elvin Bishop's Big Fun Trio was nominated for a Grammy in 2017. In 2021, his album with Charlie Musselwhite, 100 Years of Blues, also received a Grammy nomination.
