History of Elwood

The first people to settle in Elwood, New York, arrived in the mid to late 1800s. There isn't a lot of written history from that exact time. However, a book from 1874 about Suffolk County mentioned Elwood. It described the area as being about one and a half miles southeast of a place called Cuba.

Farming Life in Early Elwood

In the early days, Elwood had many large farms. Farmers were drawn to the area because of its flat land and the rich soil found on Long Island. They came to grow and produce food. It's thought that Elwood might have gotten its name from an early settler named Elkanah Wood, but this is just a theory.

The Importance of Education

As the Elwood community grew, many families focused on farm work. This meant that fewer children attended school. However, people soon realized that education was very important. In 1894, New York State passed a law. This law made it a rule that every child between 8 and 16 years old had to go to school.
