Emeishan Traps facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Emeishan Traps is a huge area in China where lots of volcanic rock was formed a long, long time ago. You can find it mostly in the Sichuan province in Southwestern China. Geologists call this type of area a "large igneous province." It's made of many layers of basalt rock, which looks like steps. These layers were created by many magma eruptions over time.

The volcanic eruptions that formed the Emeishan Traps started about 260 million years ago. Even though they were smaller than another huge volcanic area called the Siberian Traps (which formed about 251 million years ago), the Emeishan Traps were still big enough to change the ecology (the living things and their environment) of the time. They are linked to one of the big mass extinction events that happened near the end of the Permian period.

What are the Emeishan Traps?

The Emeishan Traps are like a giant stack of pancakes made of rock! These "pancakes" are layers of basalt, a type of igneous rock that forms when lava cools down. Each layer was made by a different volcanic eruption. Over millions of years, many eruptions happened, building up these thick, step-like layers of rock.

When Did They Form?

The volcanoes that created the Emeishan Traps started erupting around 260 million years ago. This was during a time in Earth's history called the Permian period. These eruptions lasted for a long time, laying down many layers of rock.

Impact on Ancient Earth

Even though the Emeishan Traps were not the biggest volcanic event in Earth's history, they were still enormous! Their eruptions released huge amounts of gases and dust into the air. Scientists believe this had a big effect on the Earth's climate and environment.

The Emeishan Traps are thought to be connected to a major mass extinction event that happened at the end of the Permian period. A mass extinction is when a very large number of species die out in a short amount of time. Scientists are still studying exactly how much the Emeishan Traps contributed to this ancient disaster.

Volcanoes and Extinctions

Scientists often debate what causes mass extinctions. One big idea is that huge volcanic eruptions, like those that formed the Emeishan Traps, can cause them. This is because volcanoes can change the climate and atmosphere in big ways.

Another idea is that meteor or comet impacts caused these extinctions. Some scientists have even suggested that impacts might trigger huge volcanic eruptions. However, this idea isn't widely supported by most scientists. The Emeishan Traps are an important clue in understanding how Earth's past events shaped life on our planet.
