Emerald Bay State Park is a super cool place in California, United States. It's located right on Lake Tahoe's beautiful Emerald Bay. This area is so special that it's even called a National Natural Landmark!

The park has amazing features like Eagle Falls, where water tumbles down. You can also visit Vikingsholm, a huge 38-room mansion. It's built in a unique Scandinavian style, like buildings you'd see in countries like Sweden or Norway. A lady named Lora Josephine Knight hired her nephew, Leonard Palme, to design this amazing house.

Emerald Bay is also home to the only island in all of Lake Tahoe, called Fannette Island. You can reach the park easily by car using California State Route 89. It's one of the most photographed and popular spots around Lake Tahoe!

Discovering Emerald Bay State Park

Emerald Bay was recognized as a National Natural Landmark in 1969. This means the federal government thinks it's a very important natural area. Later, in 1994, California State Parks decided to protect the water around the bay too. This made Emerald Bay one of the first "underwater parks" in California! It helps protect old shipwrecks and other interesting things found at the bottom of the bay.

The park itself is about 1,533-acre (620 ha) big. That's like over 1,000 football fields! It was created in 1953. You'll find it just south of another park called D. L. Bliss State Park.

What to Expect When You Visit

If you visit in the summer, the weather is usually nice. Temperatures might be around 40 °F (4 °C) at night and warm up to 70 °F (21 °C) during the day. In winter, it gets colder, usually between 20 and 40 °F (−7 and 4 °C). Sometimes, if the winter is really cold, the whole bay can even freeze over!

Emerald Bay is about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) long. At its widest point, it's about two-thirds of a mile (1 km) across. It's a great place for hiking, exploring, and taking amazing pictures!
