Emiko Nakano was born on July 4, 1925, in Sacramento, California. Her parents had moved to America from Japan. She grew up in a town called Chico in California.

Life During World War II

When Emiko was in high school in 1939, World War II began. Because her family was of Japanese descent, they were sent to special camps for about three years. This happened due to a government order called Executive Order 9066. First, they went to the Merced Assembly Center, and then to Camp Amache. After they were released from the camps, her family moved to Richmond, California.

Emiko's Art Education

From 1947 to 1951, Emiko studied art at the California School of Fine Arts. This school is now known as the San Francisco Art Institute. She learned from many famous artists like Clyfford Still and Richard Diebenkorn. She also took classes at the University of California, Berkeley in 1949 and at Mills College in 1952.

Her Work and Legacy

In the 1950s, Emiko Nakano worked as a freelance fashion illustrator. This means she drew pictures for fashion magazines or companies. She passed away on March 7, 1990, in Richmond, California, at 64 years old. Today, some of her artwork is kept in the public collection at the Monterey Museum of Art.
