The Monterey Museum of Art (often called MMA) is a cool art museum in Monterey, California. It started in 1959. The museum collects, keeps safe, and helps people understand art from California. It shows art from the 1800s all the way to today. You'll see lots of art from Northern and Central California, especially older pieces from the Carmel Art Colony.
The museum has two main buildings: one on Pacific Street and another called La Mirada. The Pacific Street building has eight art rooms (galleries). It also has offices, classrooms, a library, and a special Youth Gallery for young artists. In 1983, the museum got the historic La Mirada estate. This building shows the history of the Monterey area. La Mirada was made bigger with new galleries. It now hosts art shows from other museums. It also displays amazing pieces from the museum's own collection. You can see works by famous artists from the 1800s and 1900s. It also features important new artists like Ingrid Calame.

What Art Shows Can You See?
The MMA puts on about 20 different art shows each year. These shows include special themes from their own collection. They also feature art by local artists. Sometimes, big art shows from other museums visit the MMA.
Besides art shows, the museum has many fun learning programs. Thousands of young people in the area join these programs every year. There are also special tours led by guides (docents). You can take art classes, listen to talks, and join workshops. The museum also hosts free Community Days for families. Local schools and colleges often use the museum to help students learn about art.
