Mondonico started playing football in his hometown of Rivolta d'Adda. He played for a youth team called Rivoltana. In 1966, he joined Cremonese. He played one season in Serie D and another in Serie C with them.

In the 1968–69 season, he made his debut in Serie A, which is Italy's top football league, with Torino. After two seasons with Torino, he moved to Monza to play in Serie B.

He then returned to Serie A with Atalanta for the 1971–72 season. Later, he went back to Cremonese, where he finished his playing career in 1979. He played seven more seasons with Cremonese in Serie B and Serie C.

Mondonico's Coaching Journey

Emiliano Mondonico began his coaching career with the youth team at Cremonese in 1979. By 1982, he became the manager of the main team. In 1984, he helped Cremonese achieve a big success by getting promoted to Serie A.

In 1987, he moved to Atalanta. He guided them to the semi-finals of the 1987–88 European Cup Winners' Cup. This was a major achievement for the club.

Success with Torino

In 1990, Mondonico joined Torino. He won the Mitropa Cup with them, beating Pisa. In the 1990–91 season, Torino finished fifth in the league.

The next year, he led Torino to a historic UEFA Cup final in the 1991–92 season. They lost the final to AFC Ajax. During that match, Mondonico famously lifted a chair in protest after a penalty was not given to Torino. In the 1992–93 season, he won the 1993 Coppa Italia Final (Italian Cup) against Roma.

Later Coaching Roles

In 1994, Mondonico returned to Atalanta for his second time as manager. He also had a second period coaching Torino from 1998 to 2000. After that, he coached Napoli during the 2000–01 season, but he could not prevent the club from being relegated to Serie B.

After coaching Cosenza for two years, he joined Fiorentina in 2003. The following year, he helped Fiorentina return to Serie A. This was their first time back since they had to go down to Serie C2 because of financial problems in 2002.

He later coached AlbinoLeffe in Serie B in 2006. The next year, he returned to Cremonese for his third time as manager.

Health Challenges and Final Coaching Role

In September 2009, Mondonico became the head coach of AlbinoLeffe again. He stepped down on January 29, 2011, due to "serious health issues." His assistant, Daniele Fortunato, took over temporarily. Two days later, his club confirmed he had surgery and was expected to recover.

On February 15, Mondonico returned to coaching AlbinoLeffe after his recovery. He helped AlbinoLeffe avoid relegation by winning in the playoffs against Piacenza. However, on June 13, he announced that his illness had returned and he was thinking about stepping down. On June 17, 2011, Mondonico officially resigned from AlbinoLeffe to focus on his cancer treatment.

On January 30, 2012, Mondonico returned to Serie A, becoming the head coach of Novara. The team was in last place and needed help to avoid relegation. However, he was sacked on March 6, 2012.

His Passing

Emiliano Mondonico passed away on March 29, 2018, at the age of 71. He died from stomach cancer.
