Emilie Beneš Brzezinski (born Emilie Anna Beneš) was a talented Swiss-American sculptor. She was born on January 21, 1932, and passed away on July 22, 2022. Emilie was also known as the wife of Zbigniew Brzezinski, a famous political advisor.

Becoming a Sculptor: Emilie Brzezinski's Art Journey

Emilie Beneš was born in Geneva, Switzerland. She studied art at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, United States. After college, she got married and spent 25 years raising her family. During this time, she continued to create sculptures.

First Art Show and Wood Sculptures

In 1981, Emilie had her very first solo art show in Washington, D.C. This was a big step for her career. From the 1980s onwards, she mostly worked with wood. She created many amazing pieces using this natural material.

Famous Works and Exhibitions

One of her most famous works is a huge sculpture from 1993 called Lintel. She made it from cut cherry trees and then cast it in bronze. This impressive artwork is now part of the collection at Grounds For Sculpture. This is a large sculpture park and art museum in New Jersey.

Emilie also showed her art in important international events. She exhibited at the 2003 Florence Biennale, which is a major art show. She was also invited to participate in the 2005 Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale. The Kreeger Museum held a special exhibition of her work in 2014, showing her unique style.

After finishing college, Emilie married Zbigniew Brzezinski. He was born in Poland but became a citizen of the United States. Zbigniew was a political scientist who advised President Carter. Emilie and Zbigniew had three children together.

  • Their oldest son, Ian Brzezinski, worked for the government. He was a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Europe and NATO Policy from 2001 to 2005.
  • Their second son, Mark Brzezinski, is currently the U.S. Ambassador to Poland.
  • Their youngest child, Mika Brzezinski, is a well-known television host. She co-hosts a show on MSNBC.
