Emilie's Early Life and Music Beginnings
Emilie Mover was born in Montreal and grew up in Toronto, Canada. Her dad, Bob Mover, is a jazz saxophone player, so Emilie grew up listening to many different kinds of music. She started singing professionally with her father when she was just thirteen years old.
When she was fourteen, Emilie began traveling back and forth between New York City and Toronto because her parents worked in both places. Around age sixteen, a friend showed her rock music and many new ways to write songs. Before that, Emilie mostly listened to "jazz, Elvis, and Michael Jackson," along with soul artists like Otis Redding. After spending some time in New York City, Emilie came back to Toronto. That's when she started writing her own songs and singing them while playing the guitar.
Emilie's Music Career
Emilie Mover's music career began to take off in 2007. Her song "Mountainside" was chosen to be part of the soundtrack for an independent movie called This Beautiful City. On June 5, 2008, she released her very first album, Good Shake, Nice Gloves.
Her second album, Le Pop Fantastique, came out on March 1, 2010. Many songs from this album became popular and were used in TV shows and commercials. For example, her song "Made for Each Other" was used in ads for Fisher-Price toys and Fancy Feast cat food. Other songs from the album appeared in commercials for companies like Telus, Bounce, and BlackBerry.
In December 2010, Emilie released another album called Seems So Long. On this album, her singing was supported by members of a band called Steamboat.
Singing for Stella and Sam
In 2010, Emilie started working on the music for the Canadian children's TV show Stella and Sam. While she was recording her album Seems So Long, the studio owner asked her to sing on a demo for the Stella and Sam theme song. This demo ended up being used on the show!
After a year, the show's creators asked Emilie to help write and sing several songs for the show's episodes. This led to the record label flying her from New York to Toronto to help create the full soundtrack album. Emilie shared that they wrote all the songs for the album in just two days! On March 10, 2012, The Stella and Sam Album was released. It was a huge success and won the Juno Award for Children's Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2013.
More Music and TV Appearances
Emilie continued to create music for kids, releasing The Greatest Kids Mix Tape, Vol. 1 in September 2012. Her songs have been used in many places, including commercials for brands like Dodge Journey. Her song "Made for Each Other" even became the main theme song for the Fisher-Price brand in 2012.
Beyond children's music, Emilie performed the vocals for the theme song of the TV show Lost Girl. Her music has also been featured in popular TV series such as Girls, Pretty Little Liars, and Grey's Anatomy.
On April 2, 2013, Emilie released her album Mighty Time. She recorded this album in home studios during the summer of 2012. Later that year, she released Emilie Mover Sings Peggy Lee, which she worked on with her father, Bob Mover.
In October 2013, Emilie performed a show in Toronto. A reviewer from Exclaim! magazine noted that Emilie started the show with just her acoustic guitar and powerful voice. Her folk-pop songs were simple yet rich, telling stories about love and heartbreak. She also sang some cover songs, including a beautiful version of "Chove Chuva."
In 2018, Emilie's cover of "The Wanderer" was featured in a Toyota commercial. Her song "Walkin' Through" was used in a Bose commercial, and "In Your View" appeared in a PetSmart commercial. Emilie Mover continues to live in Toronto and create music.
