Emily Paterson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1855. Her father, Duncan Wilkie Paterson, was a lawyer from Ayrshire. Her mother was Anne Fleming Stephen.

Emily loved art and studied at the Edinburgh College of Art. She also took classes in Paris, France. She lived in Edinburgh before moving to London in 1917.

Emily was a great traveler. Between 1909 and 1934, she visited many places. After World War One, she went to the old battlefields in Ypres, Belgium. She painted amazing pictures of the ruined churches and buildings there. One famous painting showed the Ypres Cloth Hall. These paintings were shown in London in 1919.

She also visited the Netherlands and Italy many times. Emily loved walking in the mountains. She often painted during trips to the Tyrol and Swiss Alps. She even showed her mountain paintings at the Alpine Club in London. Emily especially liked to paint landscapes, buildings, and plants. She was a member of important art groups like the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society.

Emily Paterson passed away in London on July 23, 1934. A special show of her art was held in London later that year. She was buried in Edinburgh with her parents.
