Early Life and Dance Training
Emily VanCamp was born on May 12, 1986, in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada. Her father, Robert VanCamp, is an animal nutritionist. Emily's first job was helping him deliver food.
She started dancing when she was just three years old. At age 11, she dreamed of becoming a professional dancer. She convinced her parents to let her join a summer dance program in Montreal. When she was 12, she was accepted into a special ballet school, the École supérieure de ballet du Québec. She moved to Montreal to live with a local family and focus on her dance training.
Emily VanCamp's Acting Career
Starting Out in Acting (1998–2002)
In 1998, Emily became interested in acting. This happened after she visited her sister Katie on a movie set. Emily began taking acting classes on Saturdays. Soon, she found an agent and started working on commercials.
Her first acting role was in a Canadian children's horror TV show called Are You Afraid of the Dark?. She appeared in a three-part episode called "The Silver Sight." She played a small part and didn't have any lines. After this, Emily played a teenage Jackie Bouvier in a TV movie. She also had a guest role in the sitcom Radio Active.
In 2001, Emily appeared in her first movie, Lost and Delirious. She also had roles in the TV miniseries Dice and the TV film Redeemer.
Big Roles on TV (2003–2010)
Emily's career really took off when she was 15. She got a main role as Sam Dolan in the TV show Glory Days. Even though the show didn't last long, her acting caught the attention of writer Greg Berlanti. He thought she was very talented and wanted to work with her.
Berlanti then cast her in his next show, Everwood, in 2002. Emily played Amy Abbott, a main character. Her character became good friends with Ephram, played by Gregory Smith. The show focused a lot on the relationships between the families. Emily became quite famous for this role. She was nominated for four Teen Choice Awards for her work on Everwood.
During her breaks from Everwood, Emily acted in a few movies. These included the thrillers No Good Deed and A Different Loyalty. She also appeared in Rings, a short horror film.
In 2007, Emily got another big role in the ABC drama Brothers & Sisters. She played Rebecca Harper, a secret child of the family's father. In 2011, Emily starred in the TV film Beyond the Blackboard. This movie was based on the true story of Stacey Bess. Later that year, she was cast as Amanda Clarke, who uses the name Emily Thorne, in the ABC drama Revenge. This was Emily's first time leading a TV show. Revenge became very popular and brought her a lot of attention. She received several Teen Choice Awards nominations for her role.
Emily also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). She played Sharon Carter, a loyal friend to Captain America. Her first appearance was in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). She returned as Sharon Carter in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Personal Life and Interests
Emily VanCamp has three sisters. She can speak French very well and feels comfortable when she hears the language. She is also a talented dancer. As a child, she studied ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and tap dance. She says her dance training helped her with the fight scenes in Revenge. Emily believes that if she hadn't become an actress, she might have continued dancing or pursued cooking.
Emily started dating English actor Josh Bowman in late 2011. They met while working together on Revenge. They got engaged in 2017 and married on December 15, 2018, in the Bahamas. In 2021, Emily announced the birth of their first child, a daughter. In 2024, they welcomed their second daughter. Emily is also a supporter of equal pay and helps with charities that protect endangered tigers.
