A Look at Emmaboda's Past
Before 1875, Emmaboda was known as Gantesbo. Back then, only two houses stood in Gantesbo. These old houses, called Gantesbo A and Gantesbo B, are still there today.
One house is west of Emmaboda's sports ground on Bökön. The other is on a hill between Emmaboda parish hall and the Bjurbäck school. The town grew when the Emmaboda railway station opened in 1874. This station was part of the important Coast-to-Coast Line. In 1875, another railway, the Karlskrona-Växjö line, also connected to the station.
Culture and Fun Events
Emmaboda has a rich cultural side. The famous musical "Kristina från Duvemåla" is based on books by author Vilhelm Moberg. Moberg was born in Emmaboda Municipality. His books, called The Emigrants series, tell the story of people from the Dufvemåla homestead. This homestead is just 3 kilometers outside Emmaboda. These stories are about their journey as they moved to the United States.
From 1988 to 2018, Emmaboda hosted the "Emmabodafestivalen." This was a popular indie-pop music festival held every year. Other exciting events also take place in Emmaboda. These include "A Day On the Strip," which is a car race. There's also the "End of Summer Big Power Meet." This classic car show brings old cars from all over Sweden and other Nordic countries.

Emmaboda Church (Emmaboda kyrka) was built in 1926. It was first designed by architect Göran Pauli. The building was originally a parish home. In 1941, it was changed into a church. Architect Paul Boberg designed these changes. The church's tower and the current choir section were added then.
The altarpiece inside the church was painted by artist Gunnar Theander in 1935. The church's bell tower holds two bells. These bells were made by the Bergholtz klockgjuteri foundry.
