History of Encampment
Encampment, also known as "Grand Encampment," is located near the border of Colorado and Wyoming. Around the year 1900, this town was a busy place for copper mining and smelting. Smelting is the process of melting ore to get the metal out.
Copper Mining Boom
At one point, a very long tramway was built. This tramway was 16 miles long and carried copper ore from the mountains into the town. There, the ore was processed. This steam-powered tramway was the longest in the world at that time!
End of Mining and New Industries
However, the price of copper dropped sharply. Also, some bad fires happened. These problems caused the mining company to go out of business. Mining operations stopped in the early 1900s. Later, a large sawmill operated in the town from 1950 until 1998.
Grand Encampment Museum
Today, you can visit the Grand Encampment Museum in town. It teaches visitors about the area's history, including copper mining, ranching, and logging. The museum has more than 15 old buildings and many interesting objects. There is also a research library inside the main building, called the Doc Culleton Interpretive Center.
