Enfield is a lively community in Nova Scotia, Canada. It's about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. This town is special because it sits right on the border of two counties: Hants and Halifax. The Shubenacadie River even flows right through it, dividing the community.

History of Enfield
Land around Enfield was first given out after 1760. One of the first land grants went to a person named Benjamin Franklin. This land was on the other side of the Shubenacadie River from where the village is now. Mr. Hall was hired by Franklin to manage the land and run a small inn for travelers.
Another area, Grand Lake East, was bought by Norman Fitzgerald Uniacke. He thought the new Shubenacadie Canal would be a great way to move goods. This shows how important waterways were for transportation back then.
How Enfield Got Its Name
Enfield became a village later than many other places in Nova Scotia. It wasn't in early records. People living there were probably listed under nearby areas like Nine Mile River. The village was even known as 'The Crossing' for a while.
The name "Enfield" was chosen at a public meeting in 1862. Thomas B. Donaldson suggested the name. He liked the name from when he lived in Enfield, Connecticut. In 1863, "Enfield" officially became the village's name.
Early Buildings and Community Life
Thomas B. Donaldson was very involved in the community. In 1871, he helped design a church for the village. Many local men helped build it that year. The church was originally Methodist. Later, it became part of the United Church of Canada.
The building was then used by the Women's Institute of Nova Scotia-Enfield Branch. They turned it into the Enfield Heritage Centre. This center helped preserve the town's history. Sadly, the old church building was taken down in the early 2000s. The Enfield Heritage Centre is now in the former E H Horne School.
Schools in Enfield
The first school in the area was likely built at Horne Settlement. It taught both young and old students. Miss Sarah Hanson, from Maine, was one of the early teachers. She was also interested in the Shubenacadie Canal project.
Later, a school was built in Enfield itself. This building was used until the early 1940s. It was then split into two homes. Another school on Horne Settlement Road was eventually torn down.
In 1942, a new school was built and given to the community by Edmund H Horne. This school opened in 1943 and served students until 2000. As Enfield grew, the Enfield District School was built. Both schools taught elementary students.
In June 2000, a brand new Enfield District School opened. It replaced both older schools. This new school teaches students from Primary to Grade Five. Older students now go to schools in Milford.
Transportation and Economy
Enfield is often called a "bedroom community." This means many people who live there travel to work in bigger areas. Most work in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) or at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport.
Enfield is about halfway between Halifax and Truro. It used to have an important railway station. This station was part of the Nova Scotia Railway and later the Canadian National Railway. It has since been moved and is now a private home.
In the mid-1800s, a system of locks was built on the Shubenacadie River in Enfield. These locks helped small boats travel from the Bay of Fundy to Shubenacadie Grand Lake. This was all part of the Shubenacadie Canal system.
Sports in Enfield
The Enfield Rugby Football Club started in 2007. They had a perfect season in their division, winning all 8 games. They also won the NSRFU Summer Division II Championship. In 2009, they were champions of the Truro 7's Indoor Rugby Men's Div 'A'.
Climate
Enfield has a climate that gets influences from both land and sea. This is common for Nova Scotia. It means the weather can change quite a bit. The closest weather station is at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. This airport is only about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of Enfield.
