What is Enger Tower?
Enger Tower is a special observation tower that gives you incredible views of Lake Superior and the Twin Ports (that's Duluth and Superior!). You can climb stairs to each of its five levels and look out through the windows. At the very top, there's a bright green light, called a beacon, that can be seen from many miles away!
Long ago, the second floor had balconies, but they were removed for safety. Now, the tower is a safe and fun place to visit.
Who Was Bert Enger?
Enger Tower was built to honor a kind man named Bert Enger (1864-1931). Bert Enger was an immigrant from Norway who came to America. He first tried to start a business in Pine City, Minnesota, but it didn't work out. Later, he moved to Duluth and became a very successful furniture seller.
Bert Enger was also a philanthropist, which means he loved to give money and help to good causes. When he passed away, he left a large part of his money and land to the city of Duluth. This land included Enger Hill, where the tower stands, along with Enger Park and Enger Golf Course.
A Royal Dedication
Enger Tower has a cool connection to royalty!
First Dedication in 1939
The tower was first officially opened on June 15, 1939. Special guests for this event were Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha of Norway. They traveled all the way from Norway to help dedicate this important landmark.
Renovations and Re-dedication in 2011
Many years later, in 2011, Enger Tower and the park around it were updated and made even better. To celebrate these improvements, the current King and Queen of Norway, King Harald V and Queen Sonja, came to Duluth. On October 17, 2011, they re-dedicated the tower, just like King Harald's parents had done 72 years before!
