Where Enköping Is
Enköping is located close to Lake Mälaren. This big lake is about 78 kilometers (48 miles) west of Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden.
Many other Swedish cities are quite close to Enköping. Because of this, Enköping's official saying is "Sweden's Closest City." This saying started in 1965. A local business found out that within 120 kilometers (75 miles) of Enköping, there are 38 Swedish cities. This area also has one-third of all the people in Sweden!
Enköping's History
Near Enköping, you can find some very old rock art. These drawings on rocks are from the Bronze Age and are some of the best preserved in central Sweden.
The town of Enköping itself has a long history, going back to the 13th century. However, the town really started to grow around the year 1250. Enköping has always been located near rich farmlands and close to Lake Mälaren. This helped the people living in the countryside become wealthy.
Enköping has also always been an important place where trade routes crossed. Even today, it's easy to travel to and from the city. The Mälar Railline (Mälarbanan) and the E18 highway make it simple to reach big nearby cities like Stockholm and Västerås.
The town has several factories and a hospital. The Swedish Armed Forces also have an important electronic warfare center there called Ledningsregementet (LedR).
