Ennis Whatley (born August 11, 1962) is an American former professional basketball player. He was picked by the Kansas City Kings in the first round of the 1983 NBA draft. Whatley played for ten seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He was a 6-foot-3-inch (1.90 m) guard. He played for teams like the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Washington Bullets, San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Portland Trail Blazers.

Whatley was born and grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. He went to Phillips High School and then the University of Alabama.

Playing in the NBA

Ennis Whatley played as a point guard. This position is like the team's leader on the court. They bring the ball up and help set up plays.

His best year in the NBA was during the 1986–87 season. He played for the Washington Bullets. He appeared in 73 games that season. He scored about 8.5 points per game.

In total, Whatley played in 385 NBA games. He scored 2,150 points during his career. This means he averaged about 5.6 points per game.

He also holds a special record for the Chicago Bulls. He averaged 7 assists per game while playing for them. An assist is when a player passes the ball to a teammate who then scores.

Playing Basketball in Other Countries

Ennis Whatley also played basketball outside the United States. He had good success in the Philippines. He played there as an "import" player in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in 1989.

He helped the San Miguel Beermen win a major championship. They won the "Reinforced Conference" in 1989. This helped the team achieve a "Grand Slam." A Grand Slam means winning all three major championships in one season.

Whatley joined the team after another player, Keith Smart, left. He came back to play in the PBA again in 1990. This time, he played for the Presto Tivoli team.

Later in his career, he also played in Israel and Lithuania. He won the Lithuanian League championship in 1998.

Life After Basketball
