Georg Enoch Robert Prosper Philipp Franz Karl Theodor Maria Heinrich Johannes Luitpold Hartmann Gundeloh Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg (born July 29, 1946 – died June 15, 2018) was a German conductor. A conductor leads musical groups like orchestras or choirs. He also owned a large winery called Weingut Reichsrat von Buhl.
Enoch zu Guttenberg started several musical groups. These groups performed special sacred choral works, which are religious songs for choirs. Enoch zu Guttenberg was born in Guttenberg, Bavaria, Germany. This was on July 29, 1946. He was part of the House of Guttenberg, a well-known family. His father, Karl Theodor von und zu Guttenberg, was a politician. His mother was Rosa Sophie Prinzessin von Arenberg. Enoch zu Guttenberg was also the father of another politician, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.
Studying Music
Guttenberg studied music in Munich and Salzburg. He learned about composing music and how to conduct. Important musicians like Bernhard Paumgartner and Antal Doráti influenced him.
Leading Choirs and Orchestras
He created musical groups to perform sacred choral works. In 1967, he started the choir Chorgemeinschaft Neubeuern. This choir quickly became famous around the world. They performed at many big festivals. These included the Schwetzingen Festival and the Rheingau Musik Festival. They also toured in Europe and South America.
Guttenberg especially loved performing sacred choral works by Bach. These included Bach's St John Passion and St Matthew Passion. He was known for performing these works with deep personal feeling. He combined old ways of performing music with a fresh, lively style.
From 1981 to 1987, Guttenberg also conducted the CäcilienvereinFrankfurt. He also worked as a guest conductor with many famous orchestras. These included the NDR Sinfonieorchester and the MDR Symphony Orchestra. In 1997, Guttenberg helped create the orchestra KlangVerwaltung. In 2010, he conducted a special performance of Verdi's Requiem in Rome. This was to honor Pope Benedict XVI.
inHerrenchiemsee Festival
In 2001, he started the Herrenchiemsee Festival. This festival holds concerts at Schloss Herrenchiemsee, a beautiful palace. Guttenberg was the Intendant, which means he was in charge of the festival.
For the festival's opening in 2012, he chose four Bach cantatas. These are special pieces of music by Bach. A reviewer said his music was deep and intense, even on a smaller scale.
In 2017, his choir, Chorgemeinschaft Neubeuern, celebrated 50 years. He and the choir received the Rheingau Musikpreis. This was at a concert where they performed music by Bruckner.
Protecting the Environment
Enoch zu Guttenberg was also very active in environmental protection. In 1975, he helped create the BUND. This is a German organization that works to protect nature. He left the organization in 2012.
Guttenberg passed away in Munich on June 15, 2018. He was 71 years old.
