Enon is a small village located in Clark County, Ohio, United States. In 2020, about 2,449 people lived there. Enon is part of the larger Springfield, Ohio area. It is also known as the main office for the Speedway gas station chain.

History of Enon Village

Enon was officially planned in 1838. Its name comes from a river called Ænon in Israel. This is where John the Baptist is said to have baptized people. A post office opened in Enon in 1838. The village became an official town in 1850.

A famous astronaut, Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, once lived in Enon with his family. He was one of the first American astronauts. Grissom was part of the Mercury 7 team. He lived here while working at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Geography and Land Area

Enon is located about 3 miles south of the old National Road. This was one of the first major improved highways in the United States. The village covers about 1.29 square miles (3.35 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village limits.

The Enon Mound

The Enon Adena Mound is also known as the Knob Prairie Mound. It is Ohio's second largest conical Indian burial mound. This important mound is located right in Enon. Experts believe the Adena culture built this mound a very long time ago.

People Living in Enon

In 2010, there were 2,415 people living in Enon. There were 1,069 households, which are groups of people living together. About 732 of these were families. The village had about 1,886 people per square mile.

Most of the people living in Enon were White (96.6%). A small number were African American (0.4%), Native American (0.3%), or Asian (1.3%). Some people were from other backgrounds (0.4%) or from two or more races (0.9%). About 0.8% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

Education in Enon

The Greenon Local School District serves the village of Enon. This district operates three schools for students. These schools are Enon Primary School, Indian Valley Intermediate School, and Greenon Junior/Senior High School. Enon also has a public library. It is a branch of the Clark County Public Library.
