Early Life and Schooling
Enric Catà was born in a town called Sant Feliu de Llobregat. His father, Salvador Catà Rossell, was from Arenys de Munt, and his mother, Francisca Catà Faura, was from Sant Feliu de Llobregat.
Enric started his first studies at the Escolapis school in Terrassa. From 1894 to 1895, he completed his secondary education in Barcelona. In 1895, he began studying architecture at university. He finished his studies and became an architect in 1903. His final project was to design a school for arts and crafts.
His Work as an Architect
Enric Catà had two main parts to his career: teaching and designing buildings. He taught at the Higher School of Architecture in Barcelona for over 25 years. He started as an assistant teacher and later became a full professor.
For 20 years, he also worked as the official architect for the town of Arenys de Munt. He designed many buildings for private clients in different towns around Girona and Barcelona.
Working for the Town of Arenys de Munt
In October 1917, Enric Catà became the municipal architect of Arenys de Munt. He kept this job until he passed away in 1937. The city council asked him to design a school. His first plan in 1917 was not built. However, a later plan from 1931–1933 was finished and opened in 1937.
He also worked on other town projects. In 1921, he designed a bridge over the local stream. In 1932, he created a General Plan for how the town should grow. In 1936, he designed the town market and houses for teachers.
Before becoming the official architect, he helped restore and expand a house called Can Pau Bernadó in 1907. In 1913, he worked on a chapel for the parish church. Around 1915, he designed a public laundry building. As the town's architect, he also drew up many plans for private homes.
Working with Other Architects
Enric Catà often worked with other architects. After finishing his studies, he worked in the office of the famous modernista architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
In 1916, he teamed up with Eusebi Bona i Puig. Together, they won a competition to design the Posts and Telegraphs building in Girona.
Another big success was in 1925, when he worked with Pedro Cendoya. They won the design competition for the Palau Nacional (National Palace). This large building was completed for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, a big international fair.
From 1929 to 1933, Catà also worked with architect Adolf Florensa. They built the Cultural Centre of the Doctor in Barcelona.
Other Notable Buildings
Enric Catà designed several other important buildings:
- In Girona, he designed the Regàs distilleries (1907) and the Gerunda distilleries (1911) near the Greater Bridge. He also designed the Albéniz Theatre (1922).
- In Portbou, he renovated the Casino España (1923).
- In Palamós, he designed the School Group (1925).
- In Reus, he designed the Soldevila Farm (1929).
- In Barcelona, he designed several grand houses for wealthy families, but sadly, many of these are now gone.
His Passing
Enric Catà died in Barcelona in January 1937. He was hit by a car while crossing Passeig de Gràcia.
