Enrique Pimentel Zúñiga (1574–1653) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Spain. He served as a bishop in two different cities during his life. First, he was the Bishop of Valladolid from 1619 to 1623. After that, he became the Bishop of Cuenca, where he served from 1623 until his death in 1653.
About Enrique Pimentel Zúñiga
Enrique Pimentel Zúñiga was born in a place called Benavides de Orvigo, Spain, on August 5, 1574. He became a priest on July 29, 1619.
On the same day he became a priest, Pope Paul V chose him to be the Bishop of Valladolid. A few months later, on December 8, 1619, he officially became a bishop. This special ceremony was led by Fernando Acevedo González, who was the Archbishop of Burgos. Another bishop, Juan Portocarrero, also helped in the ceremony.
Later, on February 13, 1623, Pope Gregory XV appointed him to a new role. Enrique Pimentel Zúñiga became the Bishop of Cuenca. He continued to serve in this important position until he passed away on June 11, 1653, at the age of 78.
His Work as a Bishop
During his time as a bishop, Enrique Pimentel Zúñiga helped to make other church leaders bishops too. He was the main person who performed the consecration ceremony for several important figures.
Some of the people he helped consecrate include:
- Garcerán Albañell, who became the Archbishop of Granada in 1621.
- Juan de la Torre Ayala, who also became the Archbishop of Granada in 1622.
- Juan Pereda Gudiel, who became the Bishop of Oviedo in 1627.
- Domingo Pimentel Zúñiga, who became the Bishop of Osma in 1631.
