Enrique Tierno Galván (born in Madrid, Spain, on February 8, 1918 – died in Madrid, on January 19, 1986) was an important Spanish politician, sociologist, lawyer, and writer. He is most famous for being the Mayor of Madrid from 1979 to 1986. This was a key time when Spain was becoming a democracy again. As Mayor, he helped Madrid grow and supported a cool cultural movement called the Movida madrileña.

Enrique Tierno Galván's Life and Work
Early Life and Studies
Enrique Tierno Galván fought in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the Republicans. After the war, he continued his education. He earned two Ph.D. degrees, one in Law and another in Philosophy.
He became a university professor. He taught at the University of Murcia from 1948 to 1953. Then, he moved to the University of Salamanca, where he taught from 1953 to 1965. Later, he also worked as a lawyer. He was a visiting professor at places like Princeton University and the University of Puerto Rico.
As a Writer
Enrique Tierno Galván was a very active writer. He wrote more than 30 books. He also translated important works, like the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus by Ludwig Wittgenstein.
In 1978, he was chosen to write the introduction for the new Spanish Constitution. This was a big honor and showed how much people respected his knowledge.
His Political Career

In 1968, he started a political group called the Popular Socialist Party. This party believed in social democracy, which is about fairness and equality. He was the president of this party until 1978. That year, his party joined with a larger one, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party.
In 1979 and 1982, he was elected to the Congress of Deputies. This is like being a member of parliament in Spain.
Becoming Mayor of Madrid
Enrique Tierno Galván was elected Mayor of Madrid on April 3, 1979. He was a candidate for the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party. He became the first left-wing Mayor of Madrid after 40 years of Francoist rule. He was re-elected in 1983 and stayed in office until he passed away in 1986.
Changes in Madrid
During his time as Mayor, he did many things to improve the city. He strongly supported the Movida Madrileña, a lively cultural movement. He also helped with big city projects. These included building traffic tunnels near the Atocha train station. He also encouraged people to use buses and other public transport more.
He worked to clean up the Manzanares river. He also helped organize the city's main market, Mercamadrid. Plus, he reorganized the different Districts of Madrid to make the city run better.
His Death
Enrique Tierno Galván died in Madrid on January 19, 1986. He was 67 years old and passed away from a cardiac arrest. He was buried two days later at the cementerio de la Almudena.
