Entrevaux is a small town with a big history. It sits right next to the Var River. The town is known for its unique position and strong defenses.
A Walled Village
The village of Entrevaux is completely surrounded by impressive walls. These walls were built a long time ago to protect the people living there. You can only enter the village by crossing a drawbridge. This bridge goes over the Var River.
The Drawbridge Entrance
The drawbridge leads to a fortified gate. This gate is part of the village's strong defenses. It makes you feel like you are stepping back in time when you enter.
The Citadel on the Hill
High above the village, there is a large citadel. This fortress sits on a rocky peak. A winding path leads up to it from the village.
Path to the Citadel
The path to the citadel is quite steep. It has many zigzags and goes through tunnels. This design made it very hard for enemies to attack. It also offers amazing views of the village and the river below.
Vauban's Influence
The famous French military engineer Vauban helped design and improve the defenses of Entrevaux. He was known for building very strong forts. His work made Entrevaux almost impossible to capture.
