Eragon is a 2006 fantasy film directed by Stefen Fangmeier. It is based on the popular 2002 novel of the same name by Christopher Paolini. The movie stars Ed Speleers as Eragon, a young farm boy who becomes a dragon rider. Other famous actors in the film include Jeremy Irons, Sienna Guillory, Robert Carlyle, and John Malkovich. Rachel Weisz provides the voice of Saphira, the dragon.

The film was made in Hungary, with amazing visual effects by Weta Digital and Industrial Light & Magic. Eragon was released around the world in December 2006 by 20th Century Fox. While it earned a lot of money at the box office, making over $250 million, it didn't get great reviews from critics or fans of the book. People often criticized the story and how it changed things from the novel. However, some praised the computer graphics and the acting of Ed Speleers and Jeremy Irons. Eragon was also one of the last movies ever released on VHS tapes in the United States. Even though it made money, plans for more movies based on the Inheritance Cycle book series were stopped because of the mixed reviews.

Story of Eragon

The movie begins with Arya, an elf princess, running away with a strange stone. She is being chased by Durza, a dark sorcerer working for the evil King Galbatorix. Arya uses magic to send the stone away before Durza can catch her.

Meanwhile, a farm boy named Eragon lives in the land of Alagaësia with his uncle Garrow and cousin Roran. While hunting, Eragon finds the mysterious stone. He hopes to trade it for food, but soon discovers it's actually a dragon egg! A beautiful blue dragon hatches from it. When Eragon touches the dragon, a magical mark appears on his hand. This event is noticed by many, including Arya, a wise man named Brom, and King Galbatorix himself.

Eragon secretly cares for the dragon, feeding her and teaching her to fly as she grows quickly. She can speak to him through their thoughts and names herself Saphira. One day, Durza's scary monsters, called the Ra'zac, attack Eragon's village. They are looking for the dragon and its rider. Eragon's uncle Garrow is killed in the attack. Blaming Saphira, Eragon sends her away. But then, Brom appears. He takes Eragon away from the village and explains how important Saphira is. He tells Eragon to call her back, and Saphira returns, forgiving him.

Brom leads Eragon and Saphira towards the Varden, who are rebel fighters against King Galbatorix. Along the way, Brom teaches Eragon about dragon riders, Galbatorix, Durza, and the Ra'zac. He also trains Eragon in sword-fighting. In a small village, Eragon meets a fortune-teller named Angela. She tells him that a girl needs his help and that his journey will be dangerous. When they are attacked by Galbatorix's soldiers, called Urgals, Eragon accidentally uses powerful magic, wiping out the enemies with blue fire. He passes out from the effort, but Saphira saves him.

Brom helps Eragon learn to control his magic and connect his powers with Saphira. After their first flight together, Eragon and Saphira help Brom defeat the Ra'zac. Brom then reveals he was once a dragon rider himself, but his dragon was killed by Morzan, a rogue rider allied with Galbatorix.

Durza sets a trap for Eragon, using Arya as bait. Eragon hears her telepathic calls and finds her, but Durza ambushes him. Eragon is no match for Durza, so Brom arrives to help. Brom gets badly wounded protecting Eragon. In revenge, Eragon shoots an arrow into Durza's head, making him disappear. The three escape, but Brom dies from his wounds while flying on Saphira. Eragon takes Brom's sword, Zar'roc, which used to belong to Morzan.

Eragon then meets a hooded figure who has been following them. The figure reveals himself to be Murtagh and guides them to the Varden's secret camp. Murtagh is imprisoned by the Varden because he is Morzan's son. Soon after, Durza and his army surround the rebel camp. Eragon, Saphira, Arya, and the Varden prepare for a big battle. Arya and the Varden fight Galbatorix's forces on the ground. Murtagh frees himself during the battle and helps the Varden, saving the Dwarf king King Hrothgar. This proves he can be trusted. Eragon and Saphira fight Durza in the sky. They manage to kill Durza, but Saphira is badly hurt. Eragon uses magic to heal her, and once again, he passes out from the strain.

The next morning, Eragon wakes up with Murtagh beside him. He worries Saphira might be dead, but finds her fully healed. They meet Arya, who is heading to Ellesméra to lead the elves in the coming war against Galbatorix. She calls Eragon "The great Shadeslayer," and they part ways, promising to meet again. Meanwhile, in his castle, a furious Galbatorix slashes a map, revealing his enormous, pitch-black dragon, Shruikan.
