Early Life and Football Beginnings
Eric Sutton was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. At that time, his father, also named Eric Sutton, was playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Eric spent his early childhood in Los Angeles with his mother. Later, when he was in middle school, he moved to Miami. This is where he first started playing football. When he was in grade 10, he moved again to Dallas. The great coaching he received there helped him dream of becoming a professional football player.
College Football Journey
Playing for the SMU Mustangs
Eric Sutton began his college football career with the SMU Mustangs. He played for them from 2016 to 2019. During his time there, he played in 37 games. He started in five of those games. He made 45 tackles and also played a lot on special teams. In 2019, he got injured. This allowed him to take a redshirt season. This means he could keep his year of eligibility and play later.
Time with the Texas State Bobcats
In 2020, Eric moved to Texas State University. He wanted to play more as a nickelback there. However, he did not play any games in 2020. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, which was his last year of college eligibility, he played in ten games. For the Bobcats, he recorded 22 tackles.
Professional Career in the CFL
Eric Sutton was chosen in the sixth round of the 2022 CFL Draft. He was the 53rd player picked overall. The Toronto Argonauts drafted him and he signed with the team on May 10, 2022.
After training camp, he was put on the team's practice roster. He made his first professional appearance on June 25, 2022. This was in the team's second game against the BC Lions. In that game, he made one special teams tackle. On July 24, 2022, he recorded his first two defensive tackles. This happened in a game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He had his best game for tackles on September 24, 2022. He made five total tackles against the Ottawa Redblacks.
In 2023, Eric played in four games. He made two defensive tackles that season. He finished the season on the practice roster. His contract with the Argonauts ended on November 13, 2023. This was after the team lost in the East Final playoffs.
