Erick Sermon's Early Life
Erick Sermon was born in Bay Shore, which is on Long Island, New York. His birthday is November 25, 1968.
Erick Sermon's Music Career
Erick Sermon started his professional music journey in 1986. He began as a producer and artist for the hip hop group EPMD. In 1993, he started releasing his own solo albums with Def Jam. Later, in 1997, he rejoined EPMD.
The next year, Sermon, Keith Murray, and Redman created a cover song. It was a new version of "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang. EPMD broke up again in 1999.
In 2000, Sermon moved to J Records. He released his album Music in 2001. The first song from the album, also called "Music," featured vocals from Marvin Gaye. Sermon reportedly found these unreleased recordings in a small record shop in London.
"Music" became Sermon's most successful song. It reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also hit number 2 on the R&B chart.
Sermon's second album with J Records was React, released in 2002. The main song, "React," reached number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, the album did not sell well. Because of this, Sermon left the label in 2003.
He later started his own music label called Def Squad. This label worked with Universal Records. In 2004, he released his sixth solo album, Chilltown, New York. This album included the popular song "Feel It." The song used a sample from reggae/R&B singer Sean Paul. "Feel It" became a big hit in the United States.
Erick Sermon once said he wanted to help new artists. But he has stayed active in the music industry. In 2006, he produced the song "Goldmine" for Busta Rhymes' album, The Big Bang. Soon after, Sermon recorded "Don't Make No Sense" with Def Squad. He also worked with Redman on his album Red Gone Wild. Sermon also appeared on that album with Def Squad member Keith Murray.
In early 2008, Sermon and Smith created their own record label. It was called EP Records. Their seventh EPMD album, We Mean Business, came out in December 2008.
Sermon was also featured in the last episode of Yo! MTV Raps. He participated in a freestyle session with other artists. These included Rakim, KRS-One, Chubb Rock, MC Serch, and Craig Mack.
In 2018, Sermon joined Lost Boyz' own Mr Cheeks and broadcaster Ryan Verneuille. He became the executive producer for their FM radio program, "The Ryan Show." Sermon is also part of Tracklib's Creators Advisory Board.
