Erin Mullady Hamlin, born on November 19, 1986, is a famous American luge athlete. She competed in the Olympic Games four times. Erin made history as the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in luge. She was also the first American of any gender to win a medal in luge singles.
Erin won a bronze medal in the singles event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. This was a huge achievement for USA Luge.

Erin Hamlin's Luge Journey
Starting Young in Luge
Erin Hamlin became interested in luge when she was 12 years old. She attended a special U.S. Luge Screening Camp in Syracuse, New York. By the time she was 17, Erin had already won a gold medal. This was at the Junior National Luge Championship in Lake Placid, New York. She finished first in the women's singles race. Her total time for two runs was 1 minute, 34.097 seconds.
Early Career and Junior Success
In 2004, Erin Hamlin had already won ten medals in five years of racing. She competed in Junior World Cups held in Germany and Austria. She also took part in the Junior World Championships. Erin placed seventh in the 2004 Junior World Cups. This made her a U.S. junior national luge champion. She traveled the world as a member of the U.S. Junior National Team.
Olympic Appearances
Erin Hamlin proudly represented the United States at several Olympic Games. Her first Olympic appearance was in 2006 in Torino, Italy. She then competed again in 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Many people thought she might win a medal in 2010. This was because she had a great season before the Games. She finished fourth in the 2009-10 Luge World Cup standings. However, she placed 16th at the Games that year.
In 2014, Erin earned her historic bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. This was a very special moment for her and for American luge.
Erin competed in her fourth and final Winter Olympics in 2018. These Games were held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. She was chosen to be the U.S. Flag Bearer. This meant she carried the American flag in the Opening Ceremony on February 9.

In 2009, Erin Hamlin achieved another amazing feat. She won first place at the FIL World Luge Championships. This event was held in Lake Placid, New York. This was a big deal because it was the first time in 99 races that a German woman did not win. It also made Erin the first American to ever win a world championship in luge.
Erin continued her success at the World Championships. In 2017, she won a gold medal in the sprint discipline. She also earned a silver medal in the singles event that same year. Additionally, she won a silver medal as the lead person in the mixed team relay.

Hometown and Family
Erin Hamlin grew up in Remsen, New York. She also lives in Lake Placid, New York. Her parents are Eileen and Ronald Hamlin, who still live in Remsen. Erin went to Remsen Junior-Senior High School. There, she was a Sectional All-Star in both soccer and track. She graduated from high school in 2004.
Spokesperson and Retirement
In 2009, Erin Hamlin became a spokesperson for the National Headache Foundation. She did this because she herself experienced migraine headaches.
Erin was also sponsored by Adirondack Bank. She appeared in their advertisements and commercials. These ads were shown in the Utica/Rome area.
Erin Hamlin officially retired from luge after the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. She said she was "done" with competing after the Games.
