Etymology: What Does Ermera Mean?
The word Ermera means 'red water' in the local Mambai language. People say that the first families in this area came from three mountains. These mountains are Cailitlau, Lalimlau, and Hituria. The name Ermera comes from the red-colored water that flows from these mountains.
Geography: Where is Ermera Located?
Ermera is special because it's one of only two municipalities in East Timor that doesn't have a coastline. This means it's "landlocked." The other landlocked municipality is Aileu.
Ermera shares borders with several other municipalities:
- To the north: Liquiçá
- To the northeast: Dili
- To the east: Aileu
- To the southeast: Ainaro
- To the west: Bobonaro
The borders of Ermera municipality are the same as they were when East Timor was known as Portuguese Timor. The capital city of Ermera is Gleno. Gleno is located about 30 kilometers southwest of Dili, which is the capital city of East Timor. The city of Ermera itself, also called Vila Ermera, is about 58 kilometers from Dili along the same road. In Marobo, which is in the Atsabe Administrative Post, you can find the remains of a hot springs bath from the time when East Timor was a Portuguese colony. People still use the pool today.
Administrative Posts: How Ermera is Divided
The Ermera municipality is divided into smaller areas called administrative posts. These used to be called sub-districts.
Here are the administrative posts in Ermera:
- Atsabe Administrative Post
- Ermera Administrative Post
- Hatulia Administrative Post

- Letefoho Administrative Post
- Railaco Administrative Post
These administrative posts are further divided into 52 sucos. A suco is like a village or a small community area.
