Aileu is a special area, like a county or region, in the country of East Timor. It used to be called a district. Aileu has a population of about 48,554 people, based on the 2015 census. It covers an area of 737 square kilometers.

The main town and capital of this area is also called Aileu. Aileu is divided into smaller parts called administrative posts. These include Aileu, Laulara, Lequidoe, and Remexio.

What Does Aileu Mean?

The name Aileu comes from the local Mambai language. It means "bent tree."

There's a story about how the name came to be. A long time ago, a special banyan fig tree grew in the area. Its roots twisted into a unique shape that looked like a chair. This unusual tree became very famous. Because of its unique look, the community eventually took its name from this "bent tree." Today, a wooden chair is a symbol for the whole municipality.

Where is Aileu Located?

Aileu is in the northwestern part of East Timor. It's one of only two areas in the country that don't have a coastline. The other landlocked area is Ermera.

Aileu shares its borders with several other areas. To the north, it borders Dili. To the east, it's next to Manatuto. To the southeast, you'll find Manufahi. Ainaro is to the south, and Ermera is to the west. Finally, Liquiçá is to the northwest. Aileu used to be part of Dili, but it became its own separate area before East Timor became independent.

Understanding Aileu's Administrative Posts

The municipality of Aileu is divided into four main administrative posts. These are like smaller local government areas within the municipality. They help manage different parts of the region.

The administrative posts are:

  • Aileu Vila (this is where the capital town is located)
  • Laulara
  • Lequido
  • Remexio

Community Development in Aileu

Many organizations are working to help Aileu grow and improve. These include non-governmental organizations (NGOs) like WaterAid, World Vision, and Plan International. They focus on different projects to support the community.

A special friendship also exists between Aileu and some communities in Melbourne, Australia. In May 2000, the Hume City Council and Moreland City Council in Melbourne started a friendship with Aileu. This partnership is called "Friends of Aileu." They have renewed this friendship several times, signing new agreements in 2005, 2010, and 2016. This shows a lasting connection and support between the communities.
